Identification of Abusive Relationships and Prevention of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is an abhorrent act that involves at its very core abuse of dominant position within a relationship. Abusive relationship manifests itself in various forms of domestic violence both physical and psychological. Unfortunately women continue to remain the main victims of abusive relationships and domestic violence, however, children and elderly also face it in some form or another within the household. Fundamentally, domestic violence is a human rights issue which is universal in nature, and which affects its victim in varied ways adversely affecting their role in the society. Several laws and international conventions/regulations are in place but the plight of victims of domestic violence especially women continue to be miserable. Overall, the issue of abusive relationships and domestic violence remains central to the protection of right to life and dignity of the women. The emancipation of victims of abusive relationships depends largely on the approach of policy makers in finding new solutions and better ways of implementing the already existing redressal mechanisms. This publication is an attempt to provide diagnosis of the issue at hand and also to come up with answers to some of the unique dimensions of the same.
